02-14-2013 In a historic Valentine’s Day vote, the Illinois Senate passed a bill clearing the way for same-sex couples to be legally married in the Land of Lincoln. The bill was delayed by the House until November 5, 2013, which passed an amended version of the bill by a narrow margin. Same-sex marriage has been legally recognized in Illinois since being signed into law by Governor Par Quinn on November 20, 2013. It took effect on June 1 ,2014. (The state had civil unions available for same-sex couples since June 2011.)
