June 26th Events

June 26th

06-26-2003 Lawrence v. Texas – In a 6-3 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the sodomy law in Texas and, by extension, invalidated sodomy laws in 13 other states. This marked the beginning of federal acknowledgment that same-sex people are treated as second class citizens in this country. By recognizing LGBT people as a class, acknowledging their relationship and enduring bond, it opened up the possibility of how the Court going forward would recognize LGBT persons and deal with discrimination.

06-26-2013  Regarding California Prop. 8, the Supreme Court dismissed the case based on “no standing” for those challenging the California court decision by Judge Vaughn Walker. Judge Walker’s decision decided the case and marriage in California resumed on June 28, 2013.
