10-28-2008 Milk (Film) – Premiers in San Francisco. Starring Sean Penn, it is an American biographical film based on the life of gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. The film was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two, for Best Original Screenplay (Dustin Lance Black) and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Sean Penn). Upon receiving the Oscar, Penn said, “I think it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way. We’ve got to have equal rights for everyone.”
